How to Build a Simple Skincare Routine for Beginners

Starting a skincare routine can feel confusing.

There are cleansers, toners, serums, moisturizers, sunscreens, masks, exfoliators, eye
creams, sleeping masks, and countless ingredients to choose from. Then you see a 10-step
routine online and suddenly skincare feels like a full-time job.

The good news?

You don't need dozens of products to take care of your skin.

A simple routine with the right products can be a much better starting point.

Whether you're completely new to skincare or you've collected too many products and don't know what to use first, here's a simple guide.

Step 1: Start With a Cleanser

The first step of most skincare routines is cleansing.

A facial cleanser helps remove sweat, excess oil, dirt, sunscreen, and other buildup from
your skin.

Choose a cleanser based on how your skin feels rather than simply choosing one because
it's popular.

If your skin feels tight and uncomfortable after cleansing, the cleanser may be too drying for you.

If your skin becomes very oily shortly after washing, you may prefer a cleanser designed for oily or combination skin.

For acne-prone skin, you can also look for cleansers formulated specifically for
blemish-prone skin.

Step 2: Add a Serum If You Need One

Serums are concentrated skincare products designed around particular skin concerns.

This is where you can make your routine more targeted.

For example:

Dull-looking skin: Look for brightening-focused products.

Dark spots: Consider products containing ingredients such as niacinamide or vitamin C.

Dehydrated skin: Hyaluronic acid and other hydrating ingredients can be useful.

Signs of aging: Products containing retinoids, peptides, or other targeted ingredients may
be considered.

Blemish-prone skin: Look for products formulated around acne and excess oil concerns.

You don't need multiple serums at the beginning. Pick one product that addresses your
main concern and see how your skin responds.

Step 3: Moisturize

Moisturizer helps support the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss.

Even if you have oily skin, skipping moisturizer isn't necessarily the answer. Instead, you
may prefer a lightweight gel or lotion texture.

People with dry skin may prefer richer creams.

The important thing is finding a moisturizer that feels comfortable and doesn't leave your skin excessively greasy or dry.

Step 4: Never Skip Sunscreen in the Morning

If there is one daytime skincare product that deserves extra attention, it's sunscreen.
Apply sunscreen as the final step of your morning skincare routine.

Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF and choose a texture that you can
comfortably wear every day.

There are many different options available today, including lightweight sunscreens, matte
sunscreens, sunscreen gels, body sunscreens, and sunscreen sprays.

The best sunscreen is ultimately one you will apply consistently and correctly.

A Simple Morning Routine

For beginners, your morning routine can be as simple as:

Cleanser → Serum → Moisturizer → Sunscreen

You don't necessarily need every step every day. If your skin doesn't need a serum, you can
skip it.

A Simple Night Routine

Your night routine could be:

Cleanser → Serum → Moisturizer

That's it.

Once you've established this routine and your skin is comfortable with it, you can decide
whether you actually need additional products.

What About Toner?

Toner is optional.

Some people enjoy using toner because it provides additional hydration or prepares the skin for the next steps.

But you don't have to use one just because skincare routines online include it.
If your basic routine is working well without toner, there's no need to force another product into it.

What About Sheet Masks?

Sheet masks can be a fun addition to your routine.

They're often used for hydration, brightening, soothing, or other targeted benefits depending on their formulation.

However, a sheet mask shouldn't replace your basic routine.

Think of it as an additional skincare step rather than a necessity.

Don't Introduce Everything at Once

This is one of the most important tips for beginners.

If you buy five new products and start using all of them on the same day, you won't know
which product is responsible if your skin reacts badly.

Instead, introduce new products gradually.

Give your skin time to adjust and pay attention to how it feels.

Your Skin Doesn't Need Every Trending Ingredient

Every few months, a new skincare ingredient becomes popular on social media.

That doesn't mean you need it.

Skincare should be based on your needs rather than trends.

Ask yourself:

● What is my main skin concern?
● Is my skin oily, dry, combination, or sensitive?
● What products am I already using?
● Do I really need another product?

A smaller routine that you follow consistently is usually easier to maintain than a complicated routine you abandon after two weeks.

Final Thoughts

Building a skincare routine doesn't have to be complicated.

Start with the basics:

Cleanse. Treat your main concern. Moisturize. Protect your skin from the sun.

Once you understand what your skin needs, you can gradually explore products from
Korean, Japanese, and Thai beauty brands.

At SKINEVE, you can explore imported beauty products from Korea, Japan, and Thailand
and build a routine that makes sense for your skin rather than simply following the latest
trend.
